What Is Embossing?

While embossing and debossing have been around since the 15th century, the process we now use and are familiar with didn’t appear until the 19th century. It is one of the most documented and longest-lasting methods of embellishment.

Embossing involves the use of metal plates to raise a logo, text or image to create a 3-dimensional effect. It is more accurately described as a kind of stamping or moulding of the stock to create a design.

Embossing and debossing add a touch of luxury to a wide variety of products and is an affordable and effective way to enhance your printing.

What is  the  Process  for  Embossed/Debossed Printed Products?

The process of embossing/debossing is much simpler than the results it produces. The material to be embossed/debossed is placed between two plates or dies fitted to an embossing press. These plates are most often made from magnesium, copper or brass and fit precisely into one another.

When they are pressed together, the material inside is forced into the recessed image by the plate behind. This leaves the embossed/debossed image or text behind.

Types  of Embossing

Depending on the final effect you are after, you may like to stick with a traditional embossing approach or choose some added extras for maximum impact.

Foil embossing Brisbane1) Blind embossing  – This is the most traditional style of embossing and leaves clean, uncomplicated and subtle impressions.

2) Registered embossing - This process involves placing an embossed image in alignment with another element. This element can be created with ink, foil, punching or with a second embossed image.

3) Combination embossing - When foil printing and embossing is used on the same image for maximum visual effect.

4)  Glazing - This uses heat in combination with the embossing process and leaves the embossed area with a shiny or polished appearance.

What Is Debossing? Debossed Business Cards Brisbane

Debossing is similar to embossing except the image, logo or text is pressed down into the chosen material to leave an indentation, rather than upwards and out of the stock.

Debossing is favoured for thicker materials such as leather that require more pressure applied to leave a clear image. It is unsuitable for thinner materials as it tends to leave an impression on the reverse side and can tear through.

Where  and  on  What Can You Use Embossing/Debossing?

Embossing/debossing can be used to add flair or creativity to a whole host of materials and items. Virtually anything flat, malleable and thin enough can be successfully embossed. This includes paper, foil, leather, thin cardboards, non-woven textiles such as felt and some plastics. Some of the more common items that respond well to embossing include -
